What is Plum Crisp?
A Plum Crisp is a delicious traditional and classic dessert that is made with a streusel topping and a plum filling. It's called a crisp because of the crunchy and crispy top you get from combining old-fashioned rolled oats, butter, and warm spices like cinnamon.
Plum Crisp truly is the perfect dessert for every occasion that feels like home. If you have a bunch of plums at hand, it's a great way to make the most of them.
What’s the Difference Between Plum Crisp, Plum Cobbler, and Plum Crumble?
All three desserts are very similar to one another but they have some differences. They all have the same plum filling, but the toppings make them unique and different from each other.
Plum crisp topping typically contains oats and also makes use of melted butter, both of which help produce a crunchier and crispier consistency when baked in an oven.
Plum crumble topping is a classic crumb topping that goes well with plum pie or crumb cake. The flour and sugar are combined with cold butter, resulting in a drier, almost sandy texture, hence the name.
Cobblers, on the other hand, have a biscuit or scone-like toppings with a plum filling. All three desserts are delicious, but there is something just extra special about a plum crisp!

What You Need to Make Plum Crisp at Home
Making this delicious Plum Crisp is super easy and you're going to absolutely love how simple the ingredients are. Let's look at them in more detail:
For the Plum Filling:
- Plums: Plums are best when they're in season and that's when you're going to get the sweetest and juiciest ones. I used homegrown Damson plums, but you can use whichever ones you can get your hands on.
- Sugar: The next thing we need to bring out the juices and flavor is some regular granulated white sugar.
- All-purpose flour: We'll also need some all-purpose flour to coat our plums properly.
For Plum Crisp Topping
- All-purpose flour: First of all, need some regular, all-purpose flour to get the perfect structure and base for our topping. You may substitute regular flour for almond flour.
- Butter: Next, we'll need some unsalted butter because it will help crisp up the delicious plum 'crisp' and make it exactly how it should be: crunchy and delicious but with a juicy filling.
- Brown sugar: We'll also need some light brown sugar to add depth to the flavor of our streusel topping.
- White sugar: Apart from brown sugar, we'll also use some regular, granulated white sugar in this delicious recipe to get the sweetness to the perfect level.
- Salt: To balance things perfectly, we'll also be adding a little salt to our delicious dessert.
- Cinnamon: Cinnamon just brings it all together for the most delicious fall and summer dessert that's comforting and just right!
- Oats: We'll also need some old-fashioned rolled oats for this recipe and this is an essential ingredient for achieving the perfect crisp! It'll give you a crunchy texture and it'll golden brown beautifully.

How to Make Plum Streusel Topping
Start by preheating your convection oven to 325 F (165 C).

How to Make Plum Filling Coating
Time to make our delicious plum coating! In a small glass bowl add organic sugar and organic all-purpose flour. Mix well until combined and set aside until ready for use.
How to Prep Plums for Plum Crisp
Time to prep our plums! Rinse plums. Cut each plum in half and remove the pit. Then cut each half in half again to end with ¼ sized pieces. Put the cut plums into a large bowl.
Sprinkle with sugar/flour coating mixture prepared earlier. Toss the plum slices with the flour mixture until all are covered well.
How to Bake Plum Crisp Perfectly
Transfer coated plums into a ceramic baking dish. Cover with oats mixture and bake for 45 minutes at 325 F (165 C).

Substitutions and Variations
This delicious Plum Crisp is, honestly, absolutely perfect as it is! But if you're looking to change it up a bit and customize the flavor to your preference, here's what you can do:
- Nuts: Consider adding some nuts to the topping! Some great options include chopped almonds, pistachios, pecans, and walnuts.

How to Store Leftovers
You can store this delicious plum crisp in an airtight container for up to 3 days. If you're planning on serving it the same day, you don't need to store it in the fridge right away since a few hours on the kitchen counter should be fine (unless you live in a really warm country!).
You can also freeze your delicious plum crisp! Just wrap it properly in plastic wrap after it has cooled down and pop it in the freezer! This way, you can freeze it for up to 3 months.
Let it thaw in the fridge overnight before popping it in the oven at 300 F for 15 minutes or until it's warm all the way through.
