What You Need to Make Burger Tacos at Home
All you need is some simple ingredients to make the most delicious burger tacos ever. Here's what you'll need to make them at home:
- Ground beef: We'll need ground beef for the base of our burger tacos. You can go with lean meat or a higher fat content for a juicier taste.
- Corn or flour tortillas: We're going to use tortillas instead of buns. Corn tortillas will be slightly sweeter and are better for hard tacos while flour tortillas are good for soft tacos.
- Cheddar cheese: Let's also grab some cheddar cheese for our burger tacos. It will add a nice creamy and slightly tangy flavor to the dish.
- Salt and black pepper: Both these seasonings are essential for a good grilled burger. They bring out the flavors and add a slightly spicy, earthy taste.
- Lettuce: Next we need some fresh lettuce to shred for this delicious recipe. It'll add a delicious crunch to every bite! I like to use organic lettuce when I can.
- Tomatoes: Grab your favorite tomatoes to top the tacos with also. They're juicy and add a slightly acidic flavor. It'll make all the flavors come together perfectly.
- Pickles: I love pickles on my cheeseburgers, and burger tacos are no exception! They have a tart taste that adds a refreshing contrast to the savory flavors. You can even make your own homemade pickles using my recipe!
- Onions: The crunchiness of raw onions with their pungent, sweet, slightly spicy flavor are perfect for this dish. Red onions add an especially sharp flavor.
- Ketchup: A little bit of ketchup is the classic topping for burger tacos. However, you can also use a different sauce if you prefer.
How to Make Burger Tacos (Step-by-Step)
Making these delicious Burger Tacos is incredibly simple and easy. Here's what you need to do to make them step by step:
Start out by forming the patties.
Split one pound of ground beef into equal 6 pieces. Roll one piece of ground beef at a time in between 2 layers of plastic food wrap. Make them thin and much larger than the tortilla itself. This is because the patty will shrink during cooking.
Next, fry the patties on the stovetop in a large skillet on medium-high heat or grill them on the BBQ to your preference (use a grilling mat when grilling them on the BBQ since the patties are very thin).
Season each side with sea salt and freshly cracked pepper to taste per patty side. Personally, I like mine well done but you can cook yours to whichever level of doneness you prefer.
Towards the end of the frying or grilling, place the cheese of your choice on top of the burger.
Then place a tortilla on top of the cheese. Let this warm for about a minute or so.
After that, remove them from cooking. Immediately, shape them into a taco-looking shape (folding them in half), and let the meat rest for a few minutes before placing it onto a taco stand for assembly. This will make the burger taco hold its shape while you’re adding toppings.
Top them with shredded lettuce, sliced tomatoes, pickles, and onions, then drizzle with your favorite sauce.

Tips for Making the Best Burger Tacos Ever
Choose high-quality ingredients: Using the best possible ingredients will make your burger tacos taste even better. Also, make sure they're as fresh as you can get.
Don’t overcook the patties: It’s important to time them right when cooking the patties so they don’t end up dry and tough.
Let the patties rest: Let the burger patties rest for a few minutes before serving. This helps the juices redistribute through the meat for a more tender and flavorful patty.
Recipe Variation Ideas for Burger Tacos
- Loaded version: Stir the ground beef in a bowl with taco seasoning. Cook as usual, then add a layer of sour cream before folding. Top with bacon and pico de gallo, and garnish with cilantro.
- Buffalo chicken version: For a spicier option, substitute ground chicken for the beef and top with a spicy buffalo sauce.
- Barbecue pork version: Try using pulled pork instead of ground beef and top it with your favorite barbecue sauce.
How to Store Leftover Burger Tacos
Leftover burgers can be stored in an airtight container for up to three days. To maintain the freshness and quality, store it in the refrigerator. When reheating, make sure to heat on medium heat to prevent burning or drying out the burger.
If you want to freeze your burgers, wrap them tightly with aluminum foil or plastic wrap and store them in a freezer bag. They should keep well for up to two months. When you’re ready to enjoy, just thaw and follow the reheating instructions.
