What You Need to Make Easter Egg Oreo Truffles at Home
All you need are some incredibly simple, pantry staple ingredients to make these delicious Easter Egg Oreo Truffles at home. Let's take a closer look at what you'll need:
- Cream cheese: First we'll need some cream cheese for these Easter egg Oreo truffles. The slight tanginess really compliments the sweetness of the Oreos!
- Peeps Oreo cookies: Next we're going to use the Peeps version of Oreo cookies. The sweet marshmallow filling pairs perfectly with the cream cheese. Plus, it makes your Oreo cookie balls extra special. But go ahead with whichever Oreos you love best!
- White chocolate melts: We're going to use quite a bit of white chocolate melts. These are for dunking our egg-shaped truffles to coat them in chocolate.
- Assorted candy melts: We also need different colored chocolate candy melts to drizzle over the egg shapes. I used pink, green, blue, and yellow, but you can use your favorite colors.
- Sprinkles: Lastly, we'll use some colorful sprinkles to finish off the decorations.
- Liners: We'll also need a pack of mini-cupcake liners as well for the perfect presentation!
How to Make Easter Egg Oreo Truffles (Step-by-Step)
Making this delicious dessert is easier than you think. Here's what you need to make it step by step:
How to Make Oreo Cookie Balls for Easter Egg Oreo Truffles
Start out by crushing the Oreo cookies in a food processor for 2 minutes, or until they're finely crumbed.
Transfer the crushed Oreos to a large mixing bowl and add softened cream cheese. Stir on the lowest speed for 1 minute or until they're well combined.
Next, scoop a tablespoon of the Oreo mixture and shape it into a 1" inch long egg shape. You can also use a small cookie scoop. Continue making these small egg-shaped balls until you've used all the Oreo mixture.
Freeze half a batch of egg shapes for 15 minutes. Just the outer part of the egg should be cold so when it's dipped the chocolate sets quickly.
If you over-freeze them they will crack when dipped, which is why we're only freezing half a batch at a time.
How to Decorate Easter Egg Oreo Truffles
While the first half of the Oreo eggs are in the freezer, let's prepare the chocolate dip.
Melt white chocolate disks in a medium bowl over a pot of boiling water.
Take the Oreo eggs out of the freezer and dip eggs one at a time into the chocolate using forks.
Place the dipped truffles onto parchment paper and put sprinkles on them immediately. Once the chocolate begins to set, the sprinkles won't stick.
Take the second half of the Oreo eggs out of the freezer and dunk one egg at a time into the chocolate.
Place these dipped truffles onto parchment paper also, but don't add sprinkles to them. Let them dry completely before moving on to the next step.
When the white chocolate coating is dry on both batches of truffles, it's time to prepare the colored chocolate drizzle.
Put the yellow, green, blue, and pink chocolate candy melts into individual Ziploc sandwich bags. Place the side of the bags with chocolate into a bowl of hot water and allow them to melt.
When the chocolate melts, cut a corner off each Ziploc bag and drizzle the chocolate over the egg shapes.
Let everything cool completely again before moving on to the next step.
Trim off excess chocolate around the base of the truffles with a thin, sharp knife.
Carefully twist and lift each truffle off the parchment paper and put them into mini-cupcake liners.
If the truffles and chocolate aren't completely dry, chunks of them may break off the bottom when removing them from the parchment paper. Make sure to give them enough time to dry completely for a clean presentation.
Refrigerate the truffles until ready to serve. If you like the insides a little softer, take them out of the fridge 30 minutes before serving.
Your delicious Easter Egg Oreo Truffles are ready to be served!
Tips for Making the Best Easter Egg Oreo Truffles Ever
Soften the cream cheese: Make sure to use softened cream cheese when mixing it with the Oreos. If it's too cold, it will be lumpy and won't blend evenly with the cookie crumbs.
Don't microwave the chocolate: Be sure to use hot water when melting the chocolate instead of microwaving it. Chocolate tends to scorch very quickly, which will ruin the taste.
Thoroughly coat the eggs: Make sure each truffle is thoroughly coated with white chocolate before drizzling the other colors. If you don't the colored chocolate will seep through and make an uneven coating.
Recipe Variation Ideas for Easter Egg Oreo Truffles
- Change the chocolate: Instead of using white chocolate, you can use dark or milk chocolate for a different flavor. You can also add almond extract to the melted chocolate for a nutty taste.
- Add some nuts: Chopped almonds, pecans, walnuts, and hazelnuts all make great additions to these truffles. Add them before the final step by spring ling them on top of the chocolate before it sets.
- Mix in candy: Add some crushed candy canes to the Oreo mixture for a peppermint twist. Or, add some chopped-up peanut butter cups for a double dose of sweetness.
How to Store Leftover Easter Egg Oreo Truffles
If you have leftover Easter egg Oreo truffles, the best way to store them is in an airtight container in the refrigerator. The leftovers will stay fresh and creamy for up to 4 days.
You can also freeze your oreo cookie balls before coating them in chocolate for up to 1 month. Allow them to thaw a bit before coating and decorating!
