Why You'll Love Carrot Appetizer Canapés
We all love a good cheese platter, but it's time to take it up a notch with these cheesy carrot appetizers canapés. This simple appetizer is not just a crowd-pleaser, it’s also:
- Quick and Easy: This recipe takes just 15 minutes to prepare, making it the perfect last-minute party snack.
- Versatile: The combination of carrots, cheese, and dill gives it a unique and refreshing flavor.
- Healthy: Carrots are packed with nutrients, and this recipe is a delicious way to incorporate them into your party menu.
- Make-Ahead: You can prepare the carrot and cheese mixture a day in advance, saving you time on the day of the event.
- Kid-Friendly: The mild flavors of this appetizer make it a hit with both kids and adults.
Key Ingredients
- Finely Grated Carrots – Carrots add a sweet and earthy flavor to our canapés. They also provide a beautiful, natural orange color that makes our dish visually appealing.
- Cheddar/Jack Cheese – We use cheddar or jack cheese for its sharp and salty flavor (I prefer grading my own blend of cheese). When finely grated, it melts into the mayonnaise, binding all the ingredients together and adding a delicious creaminess to the canapé spread.
- Mayonnaise – Mayonnaise not only adds a rich and creamy texture to our spread, but it also helps to bind all the ingredients together. We recommend using full-fat mayonnaise for the best results.
Substitutions and Variations
These delicious carrot appetizer canapés are incredibly flavorful, but there's always room for experimentation. Here are a few of our favorite variations and substitution ideas:
- These delicious carrot appetizer canapés are incredibly flavorful, but there's always room for experimentation. Here are a few of our favorite variations and substitution ideas:
- Cheese: The cheese is the star of these canapés, and you can get creative with the type of cheese you use. Try sharp cheddar for an extra tangy flavor, or pepper jack for a spicy kick. Gruyere or Swiss cheese would be a great option as well.
- Carrots: You can substitute the carrots with zucchinis or bell peppers. You can also try using different colored carrots to add a pop of color to the canapés.
- Herbs: If dill isn't your favorite, you can try using other herbs such as parsley, chives, or even a sprinkle of thyme.
- Mayonnaise: If you're looking for a healthier alternative, you can substitute the mayonnaise with Greek yogurt or cream cheese.
How to Make Carrot Appetizer Canapés
Grated fresh or roasted carrots, shredded cheese(shred a blend of cheddar, mozzarella and parmesan cheese), mayonnaise, and garlic (and any other spices like chili powder cumin, paprika or any mild or hot sauce) are combined in a bowl. Mix well and season to make the spread.
Slice the baguette and spread a heaping tbsp. of the carrot and cheese mix on each slice. Garnish with dill, fresh thyme or fresh herbs of your choice, chill for a few hours before serving (if preferred raw), or toast them on a baking tray in a toaster oven for 5 minutes at 350 ℉.

Easy Carrot Appetizer Canapés (Party Food!)
Ingredients
- 2 cups carrots (finely grated, or 4 small carrots)
- 2 cups cheddar cheese (or pepper jack cheese, finely grated)
- 1 large garlic clove
- dill for garnishing
- ½ cup Mayonnaise
- salt and pepper to taste
- 1 French baguette (I like the bake-at-home French baguettes)
Instructions
- Peel, rinse, and finely grate carrots. (If you don't have a grater, you may get one here.)
- Place grated carrots into a small bowl. Add finely shredded cheese. Then add mayonnaise. Press garlic. Mix all together until well combined. Add salt and pepper to taste and mix it again
- Slice the baguette and lay the slices out on a platter. Spread one heaping tablespoon of carrot and cheese mix on each slice.
- Garnish with dill (optional but adds a marvelous taste and aroma), chill for a few hours before serving (if preferred raw), or toast them in a toaster oven for 5 minutes at 350 ℉.
Notes
- When grating the carrots and cheese, make sure they are finely grated. This will help the ingredients blend well and also make the canapés easier to eat.
- Press the garlic clove instead of mincing it. This will release more flavor and give the canapés a subtle garlic
- Use mayonnaise that is at room temperature. This will make it easier to mix with the other ingredients and ensure a smoother consistency.
- Don't forget to season your carrot and cheese mix with salt and pepper. This simple step can make a big difference in bringing out the flavors of the other ingredients.
- Garnishing with dill is not only for presentation. It also adds a fresh, herby note that complements the sweetness of the carrots and the richness of the cheese.

All the time I make sandwiches like this my bread turns soggy. What is the trick to having crispy bread and not soggy bread?
Valya of Valya's Taste of Home says
What kind of bread are you using? You may need to toast the bread first if the bread is too soft. Try to avoid adding liquid onto the bread as well.
Maya says
Do you cook the carrots are leave them raw?
Valya of Valya's Taste of Home says
Raw carrots.

Valya, These look really good and so easy to make. Thank you for sharing this recipe with us! I am going to make it tonight for my family. Valya, can you tell me what kind of a grater do you use? Thank you.
valya'stasteofhome.com says
You are very welcome Tanya! Enjoy! Tell me how you like it. Some of my readers who already made this canapés, they toasted them in the oven for 10 min. I will try toasting them next time I make it too. I got my grater from Ukraine (it's already old and braking apart), but I have link on the blog the one I want to get from amazon. Thank you for awesome feedback! 🙂
