What You Need to Make Bacon Cheeseburgers at Home

All you need are some simple ingredients to make the tastiest bacon cheeseburger you’ve ever had! Let’s look at what these are in more detail:

  • Ground beef: First we’ll need some ground beef to throw on the grill for this recipe. Barbecuing the beef will make it both smoky and savory and it’s absolutely great for our burgers.
  • Cheddar cheese: This cheese adds a rich and savory flavor to our bacon cheeseburger recipe. The sharp and tangy taste of cheddar cheese complements the juicy and beefy flavor of the burger patty, while also helping to balance out the saltiness of the bacon.
  • Bacon: Next we’re going to add nice crispy bacon to our burgers, the perfect crunchy and savory addition to the ground beef. I’ve used my recipe for oven-broiled bacon for the best texture and flavor.
  • Salt: Salt is an essential ingredient in any bacon cheeseburger recipe because it enhances and brings out the natural flavors of beef, bacon, and other ingredients.
  • Pepper: We’ll be adding black pepper to our burgers also for its spicy and pungent taste. Pepper also helps balance out the richness of some ingredients while enhancing the flavor of others.
  • Brioche hamburger buns: These hamburger buns are enriched with butter, eggs, and sugar, which will give our burgers a unique texture and slightly sweet flavor. You may also use homemade burger buns if you have any on hand.
Pepper also helps balance out the richness of some ingredients while enhancing the flavor of others.

Condiments and Toppings for Bacon Cheeseburger:

  • Purple onion: Raw onions provide a crunchy and slightly pungent flavor that will add a fresh and tangy element to our burgers.
  • Pickles: We’re also going to use some pickles, which provide a refreshing and tangy contrast to the rich and savory flavors of the bacon and cheese.
  • Leaf lettuce: Lettuce will give our burgers a fresh and crisp texture, which can balance out the rich and heavy flavors of the bacon and cheese, while also adding a slightly bitter and vegetal flavor.
  • Mayonnaise: We’ll also need some mayo to add to this classic bacon cheeseburger. Nothing beats homemade mayonnaise for a burger topping, with its rich and creamy texture and slightly tangy flavor. I seriously recommend you try my recipe for the best-tasting burger condiment! I prefer ranch for a burger topping.

How to Make Bacon Cheeseburger (Step-by-Step)

Making this classic bacon cheeseburger is easier than you think! Here’s how to make it step by step at home:

How to Cook the Bacon Cheeseburgers

First, we’ll divide one pound of beef into 4 equal pieces, then shape each piece into a round-shaped burger patty.

Second, let’s preheat the grill for 10 to 15 minutes, then we’ll place each patty on it leaving some space between each.

While the patties are cooking, we need to season each side with salt and pepper to taste.

We’re going to grill the patties over direct heat for about 10 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F, flipping them once halfway through cooking.

Lastly, we’ll add cheese slices to each patty during the last minute of grilling.

Remove burgers from the grill and set them aside on a baking sheet or pan covered with foil while you lightly grill the burger buns.

NOTE: You can also grill the burger patties on the skillet over the stovetop, and toast buns in the toaster oven during cold weather or if you don’t have a barbecue grill.

How to Assemble the Bacon Cheeseburgers

First, place the beef patty with melted cheese on the bottom portion of the bun.

Second, place the cooked bacon on top of the cheese. Top the bacon burger with pickles, a few slices of red onion, a couple of slices of tomatoes, and leaf lettuce.

Finally, spread some mayonnaise, ranch, or guacamole on the inside of the top portion of the burger bun and place it over the lettuce.

NOTE: I’ve always placed lettuce under the top portion of the burger bun. During my high school years, I worked in a burger restaurant and that’s how we learned to assemble burgers there. In my opinion, it looks more presentable and appetizing than placing lettuce on the bottom portion of the burger.

Placing lettuce on the bottom portion of the bun and topping it with a hot burger will make the lettuce wilt from the released burger juices and hot temperature. That ruins the presentation of the burger.

Tips for Making the Best Bacon Cheeseburger Ever

Start with quality ingredients: Quality beef and cheese will make a huge difference in the overall taste of your bacon cheeseburger.

Use fresh buns: Fresh buns will make a big impact on the texture and flavor of your burgers, so try to get them from a bakery or make them at home.

Use a thermometer: Using a thermometer is the best way to ensure that your beef patties are cooked to perfection every time.

Let the burgers rest for a few minutes after cooking: Allowing your burgers to rest for at least 5 minutes after cooking will make sure that all the juices and flavors stay locked inside, giving you a juicy and flavorful burger.

Recipe Variation Ideas for Bacon Cheeseburger

While this bacon cheeseburger is delicious the way it is, there are plenty of ways to mix it up and add some variety to this incredible dish. Here are a few recipe variation ideas:

  • Make it classic: For a more classic burger, try adding a few slices of dill pickles, shredded iceberg lettuce, and some ketchup to your bacon cheeseburger.
  • Change the sauce: Ranch dressing and guacamole are also great choices for the bacon cheeseburger sauce. Switch them with the mayonnaise or mix and match for different flavors.
  • Make it extra cheesy: For an extra cheesy burger, try adding some more cheese slices on top of the burger patty before you assemble it. You can also add a few slices of cooked mushrooms as well.
  • Make it healthier: For a healthier version, you can substitute the beef patty for a grilled chicken patty and the cheese slices for a slice of low-fat cheese. To make it vegan, try using a veggie patty and vegan cheese slices.

How to Store Leftover Bacon Cheeseburger

If you have any leftover bacon cheeseburgers, it’s important to store them properly in order to maintain the best taste and texture. The best way to store leftover burgers is by wrapping them in aluminum foil or plastic wrap and placing them in an airtight container.

You can store them this way for up to 3 ways in the fridge. To keep the burger as fresh as possible, make sure all the air is out of the container before you close it.

You can also store your bacon cheeseburger patties (without cheese) in the freezer in a freezer-safe container for up to three months. Allow it to thaw overnight before warming and assembling according to the instructions in my recipe.
