What Is Mushroom Lasagna?
Lasagna has always been my favorite dish. I love its simplicity, versatility, and deliciousness. This mushroom lasagna recipe is quick and easy to prepare, and tastes great too.
I've tried several recipes over the years, but none of them came close to tasting as good as this mushroom lasagna recipe.
It's one of those dishes that tastes even better the next day. And if you're looking for a recipe that has a lot of flavor without being too heavy, then mushroom lasagna is just the ticket!
It's a dish made of layers of lasagna noodles covered in cheese and delicious sautéed mushrooms that are then baked under golden brown. Topped off with herbs and spices, this dish is sure to please any crowd.
It’s one of my favorite dishes to serve guests at home. And if you ask me why it’s not just because it tastes great but also because it’s versatile.
You can use any kind of mushroom to create this recipe. But since white mushrooms are classics and hold up well during cooking, they’re my preferred choice. They also happen to be pretty affordable.
I love using them because of their classic, robust mushroom flavor, making them perfect for adding depth to this lasagna dish. If you’ve never had mushroom lasagna before, you should definitely give it a try!
What Makes This Mushroom Lasagna Special?
There are many reasons why we love this dish. For starters, it's delicious! But there's something else special about this recipe. We've added a secret ingredient that gives our mushroom lasagna a unique twist.
This version of mushroom lasagna has some unique ingredients that set it apart from others. For starters, there’s no tomato sauce. That means you won’t need to worry about making a sauce for hours and hours for this dish.
Instead, we’re going to use a homemade alfredo sauce with our lasagna noodles that's better than a traditional béchamel sauce. Then, instead of topping the lasagna with mozzarella cheese, we’re using a mix of three kinds of cheeses namely Parmesan, Romano, and mozzarella cheese.
With a combination of bacon and chicken take this mushroom lasagna to the next level, and give it a heartier, more wholesome touch. It's truly a meal for the family!
What Types of Mushrooms Can I Use in Mushroom Lasagna?
For this recipe, you can use any type of mushroom you choose.
Try using baby bellas, shiitake mushrooms, button mushrooms, cremini mushrooms, porcini mushrooms, portobello mushrooms, baby bellas, and wild mushrooms.
Just keep in mind to pick ones that are firm enough to hold their shape. You can also add dried varieties on top such as dried porcini mushrooms.
What You Need to Make Mushroom Lasagna at Home
It's incredibly easy to make your own Mushroom Lasagna and the ingredients are simple too! Here's what you'll need to make it at home:
Homemade Alfredo Sauce: You can try this delicious recipe to make your own Alfredo sauce which will elevate your mushroom lasagna and make it different from the standard tomato sauce-based ones.
Lasagna noodles: Lasagna noodles are used to hold layers of sauce and cheese together while baking. They also add extra flavor to the dish.
Chicken: For some extra protein and flavor, we'll also be adding some grilled chicken strips to our tasty lasagna.
Mushrooms: You can use whichever kind of mushrooms you love the most. I'm using white button mushrooms in this recipe.
Bacon: To take the flavor to the next level, I'll also be adding some bacon to the dish. It goes incredibly well with the mushroom flavor in this lasagna!
Mozzarella cheese: Mozzarella cheese has a high water content, which makes it melt easily when heated. This means that mozzarella melts faster than other cheeses, such as cheddar, parmesan, or provolone. The combination of mozzarella and mushrooms creates the perfect combination in this lasagna.
Parmesan cheese: Adding parmesan cheese to a lasagna dish makes it taste better because it adds flavor and texture. The cheesy flavor enhances other flavors in the dish, especially the mushrooms. It has a strong flavor, which complements all types of food.
Romano cheese: We'll also be adding some romano cheese to our mushroom lasagna dish. The cheese melts into the pasta sauce, adding flavor and texture. Romano cheese has a mild flavor and melts easily.
Spring onions: You'll also need to add some spring onions as it gives the dish a fresh taste, and makes it look beautiful. Spring onions are also known as green onions, which means they are young onions.
Seasonings: We'll also need to add some seasonings to our lasagna! Adding salt and pepper to food is important for flavor. Salt helps bring out the flavors of other ingredients, while pepper adds heat and spice. If you don't add these two things, then you might be missing out on some delicious meals!
How to Make Mushroom Lasagna (Step-by-Step)
This mushroom lasagna recipe is simple and quick to prepare. The ingredients are easily found at your local grocery store. All you need to do is follow these steps.
How to Prep Ingredients for Mushroom Lasagna
First, prepare the ingredients that need time to cool down. Make Homemade Alfredo Sauce and set it aside to cool. It's super easy. You'll have to stir all-purpose flour with butter melted butter and then whisk in some hot milk at medium-high heat. The exact instructions and ingredient lists are in my recipe post.
Next, boil lasagna pasta according to package instructions in a large pot or large saucepan. Drain and rinse with cold water (to prevent it from sticking together) and then line the cook lasagna pasta into a lasagna pan to cool and cover it to prevent it from drying out.
Cut chicken strips into small chunks and set them aside until ready for use.
Cut bacon into small pieces and fry over high-medium heat until medium done.
Add chicken strips cut into small pieces and sauté until light golden brown and tender. Transfer to a large glass bowl to cool.
Peel (optional, but my preference) mushrooms.
Rinse and slice mushrooms. Heat the same pan you used earlier pan on high, add a tablespoon of olive oil, and then add sliced mushrooms and sauté on high with a wooden spoon until juices release, water evaporates, and the mushrooms turn light golden brown.
Transfer mushrooms to a large glass bowl with chicken and let it cool.
While the cooked ingredients are cooling down shred three different kinds of cheese into one bowl mix them all together to combine and set aside. Cut spring onions into small pieces.
Place ⅓ of shredded and mixed cheeses into a bowl with chicken and mushrooms, add cut spring onions, and then pour in some cold Alfredo sauce. Add salt and pepper to taste (I used 1 and half teaspoons of salt, and ¼ teaspoon pepper) and one clove of pressed garlic (optional). Mix all ingredients together.
How to Assemble Mushroom Lasagna
Lay the first layer of 5 strips of lasagna pasta onto the bottom of the lasagna pan or baking dish. Then add ½ of the Chicken Bacon Mushroom Alfredo mixture. Spread it out evenly.
Sprinkle half of the cheese. Then repeat the same steps with another layer until you add the final layer of noodles.
Cover a pan with foil and refrigerate or bake.
How to Bake Mushroom Lasagna
Preheat the oven to 350 F (180 C).
Place a lasagna pan on the middle oven rack and bake for 45 minutes or until the edges are golden brown and the cheese in the middle of a pan is melted.
Let the lasagna cool for 15 minutes before slicing for better stability.
Your delicious Mushroom Lasagna with Bacon and Chicken is ready to be served.
What Else Can I Add to My Mushroom Lasagna?
This classic recipe takes it to the next level with some added bacon and chicken! But you can add just about whatever you like and that goes well with mushrooms. Here are some ideas to try:
Cheese: You can try out different cheeses like ricotta cheese to add to your lasagna.
Fresh pasta: You can also use different types of lasagna noodles, from homemade fresh pasta sheets to no-boil lasagna noodles to everything in the middle. If you go for the no-boil noodles, make sure to make your Alfredo sauce more watery as per package instructions.
Spinach: Spinach goes really well in this recipe, so you can also add some chopped spinach to your mushrooms. Whether you go for fresh spinach or frozen spinach, it'll taste amazing. Add a little lemon juice or lemon zest to make it even better.
Fresh herbs and spices: You can also add any other fresh herbs or aromatic spices you may like such as ground nutmeg, basil, or parsley.
How to Store Leftover Mushroom Lasagna
If this portion is too large for your family it can be divided into multiple smaller glass/ceramic baking dishes and popped in the freezer to freeze it for later.
Bake a small frozen lasagna dish for about the same time as a large unfrozen dish. Trust me, it will save your life during busy days!
Store other leftovers in a casserole dish covered in plastic wrap in the fridge for up to 3 days.
