What is a Pizza Sauce?
Pizza sauce is the delicious Italian-style, tomato-based sauce that we’ve all come to absolutely love!
It’s the perfect blend of Italian spices and tomatoes for a delicious mix that goes well with just about any pizza topping and is perfect for every homemade pizza recipe.
Knowing how to make a classic pizza sauce is something everyone should know how to do. Luckily, it doesn’t have to be difficult at all.
This homemade pizza sauce recipe is seriously incredible. With minimal prep, pantry staple ingredients, and effortless storage, this pizza sauce recipe that I’m sharing with you today is definitely the best one out there!
Why Make a Homemade Pizza Sauce?
There is just nothing like having a homemade pizza sauce. This homemade pizza sauce is very close to the taste of the one that I previously bought from the store, in particular the famous Ragu brand.
Unfortunately, as we all know, store-bought sauces have preservatives and other ingredients that aren’t healthy. This made me feel unsettled when serving it to my family.
We tried some natural and organic brands, but they had tomato chunks that kids didn’t like, and it just didn’t get accepted in place of the smooth pizza sauce my family was used to.
And that’s the thing with making a homemade pizza sauce – you can always make sure it fits the palate of everyone in your family.
One day I was out of pizza sauce and the kids suggested I make it. So, I basically combined all the ingredients in this recipe, and then made pizza for the kids using this homemade pizza sauce.
And guess what? They didn’t even notice a difference from Ragu! Just said how tasty the pizza was. So, since then I’ve never bought pizza sauce from the grocery store!
Today I’d like to share this recipe with you so that you may easily make it at home for yourself. Home-fresh, tasty, and without unwanted preservatives and chemicals.
If you wanted to make the pizza sauce even cleaner and optimally healthier, use ripe homegrown tomatoes.
Sometime in the future, I will also share great recipes on making fantastic homemade tomato sauce and how to can your own pizza sauce. So you may always have it on hand.
Making pizza sauce is super easy. I’m so glad to have one less product to reach for on grocery store shelves.
What Makes This the Best Homemade Pizza Sauce Recipe Ever?
This is seriously, by far, the best homemade pizza sauce recipe you’ll ever try. So, what makes it that good? Well, for starters you don’t need to cook it at all!
Yes, that’s right. Most other recipes will have you cranking out your saucepan and then get you to simmer a sauce for a while to get the flavor you want.
This is fine, but not all of us have that kind of time and sometimes we’re looking to get that flavor but quickly. That’s where this recipe seriously outshines them all!
With just four pantry staple ingredients and 2 minutes of your time, you’ll have the tastiest homemade pizza sauce you’ve ever had! Plus, it’s lower in calories and sodium too.
And it’s incredibly versatile as well! Want to add some fresh herbs to it? Go ahead. Want to make it spicier? Add some red pepper flakes. Love onions? Add a little onion powder to it as well!
It’s seriously the best one you’ll ever try and I’m sure you’re going to fall in love with it!
Should Pizza Sauce Be Raw or Cooked?
Pizza sauce is pizza sauce, but it can mean different things to different people. But if you were to ask what pizza sauce is like authentically, it’s definitely raw the way Italians have it.
That’s also the best way to have and make pizza sauce because it takes less time and ‘cooks’ a bit more in the oven anyway.
As Americans, we’re used to wanting to cook and simmer sauces for hours upon hours, but that’s seriously not necessary and you won’t have to do it when you follow my easy pizza sauce recipe either!
What You Need to Make the Best Homemade Pizza Sauce
Homemade pizza sauce has a fresher flavor than store-bought. This is an easy recipe to make and requires only a few pantry staples:
- Tomato sauce: This will be the base of your sauce. Look for a good quality canned sauce, or you can even use fresh Roma tomatoes. A great brand of canned tomatoes that you can use as well is San Marzano tomatoes which have truly set the standards for the best-canned tomatoes on the market. However, you won’t be able to find a sauce and will have to go for whole canned tomatoes instead.
- Garlic powder: Garlic powder is going to add that delicious garlic flavor that pizza sauces are known for! If you don't keep garlic powder on hand, use garlic salt, and don’t add salt to the recipe.
- Sea salt: I recommend going for a good quality sea salt to perfectly season your homemade pizza sauce.
- Italian seasoning: Italian seasoning is a mix of dried oregano, basil, rosemary, thyme, and marjoram and is a secret ingredient I love adding for an authentic flavor without the hassle. It will add a delicious, rich taste to your homemade pizza sauce. I always use dried herbs but feel free to use fresh herbs instead.
How to Make Homemade Pizza Sauce Step by Step
Homemade pizza sauce is quick and really easy to prepare. A basic sauce can be flavored to taste in a variety of ways, as well as made with a variety of ingredients. Here is how I make it:
- Transfer tomato sauce into a glass jar. Add dry seasoning: organic Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and sea salt.
- Stir all together until well combined. Let it sit in the fridge for about 30 minutes for the flavors to soak in. That’s it!
How to Store Homemade Pizza Sauce in the Fridge
Transfer leftover pizza sauce into a glass jar and screw the jar lid on tightly to prevent as little exposure to air.
This homemade pizza sauce will last in the fridge for up to 7 days in an airtight jar or container.
Can You Freeze Homemade Pizza Sauce?
Yes, you absolutely can freeze this delicious homemade pizza sauce! You can make a few batches of it and pop it in the freezer without worrying about it losing its quality of taste.
Store it in an airtight container in the freezer for up to three months. To thaw, pop it in the fridge overnight. You can also put a jar or container into a bowl of warm water to help it thaw more quickly.
It is a pretty straightforward recipe but knowing a few tips will make life easier.
Can I Make This Homemade Pizza Sauce Ahead of Time?
Yes, you absolutely can! Keep pizza sauce refrigerated if you don’t plan to use it right away.
It will keep in the fridge for at least five to seven days until you’re ready for your pizza night!
Can I Substitute Tomato Paste for Pizza Sauce?
No. The flavor and consistency are the main reasons for not substituting the paste.
