Step 1

In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy. Add salt and flour to the yeast mixture and mix until it forms a sticky dough.

Step 2

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 5-10 minutes until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.

Step 3

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until the dough doubles in size.

Step 4

Punch down the risen dough and shape it into a long baguette shape, or divide it into smaller portions for individual loaves. Place the shaped dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and let it rise for another 30 minutes.

Step 5

Preheat the oven to 425°F (218°C). Brush the top of the bread with a beaten egg and make a few shallow slashes across the top of the bread using a sharp knife.

Step 6

Bake the bread in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom. Allow the bread to cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
